Sports Massage

What is sports massage?

Sports massage is a specific application of massage therapy and related techniques to maintain the health of an athlete and to enhance athletic performance. Sports massage can be delivered onsite during a sporting event. It is also performed as a maintenance massage done during training or in between events to maintain an athlete’s physical condition. The focus of the treatment is always to address problem areas and enhance muscle recovery. The treatment can be performed without massage oils or cream, can be done over clothing and uses specific techniques such as positional release, trigger point therapy, lymphatic drainage, myofascial release, and stretches to promote tissue health and recovery. Sports massage differs from deep tissue massage in the types of pressures, varying techniques, and sequences used.
